How do i delete my Twitter account?
Whether you’re tired of the social media platform. Or you just want a break from the online world. Today you will learn to temporarily or permanently close your profile forever.
Now, let’s say you currently have a Twitter profile that you really wish to dispose (for any reason, I don’t wish to know). How then will you go about this task?
HOW TO DELETE A TWITTER ACCOUNT
The instructions below will work for computer and mobile users. However depending on your web browser and or whether you are using the mobile application or not the instructions may vary.
STEP #1: LOGIN TO TWITTER
Simply visit Twitter website (via PC). Then key in your login details (username and password) then click “login”.
STEP #2: SELECT ACCOUNT
Once you succeed accessing your account’s home-page, click on your account’s portrait icon located on the top right corner of your PC screen. If you did this quick enough (before Twitter finished loading), it will direct you to your “settings” page. However, if you made some delay, a pop-down window like the one below will show up.
Select the “settings” option to proceed to the settings page.
Step #3: ADJUST SETTINGS
There are times you may need to change your account email and “twitter handle”. This is very important in case you desire to use them (in creating another new account) immediately you have deleted your current account. This is because Twitter holds your account for over 30 days even after you have deleted it. Thus, if you try to create a new account with the same email/ handle as your previous time, it will return an error.
This step is only necessary for those who still wish to use their email/user handle after deleting an account.
Step #4: DEACTIVATE ACCOUNT
In the page that opens, choose the “Account” tab from a list of tabs that appears on the left division of the screen. Normally, it opens by default. Then again, if it wasn’t the case with your account, simply choose it from the list.
You’re almost there now. Next, scroll to the bottom center position of the page and click “deactivate my account”.
Step #5: CONFIRM DELETION
At this point, Twitter will throw you a couple of advice and give you a chance to retain your account or to “deactivate” it. If you are very serious, don’t take time to read. Just click on “deactivate @handle” and you will be done. Otherwise you can as well cancel and retain your account.
YOU SHOULD KNOW…
i. With PCs/web only! Deactivation of a twitter account can only be done on web. So, please ensure you login via web (in a smart-device) or PC then give it a try. Also keep in mind they owns Vine.
ii. Here is the deal: …you deactivate, twitter deletes. Though I gave this article title as “how to delete your twitter account”, now I must clarify that that is not really the deal. You are only allowed to create your account and to deactivate it, only Twitter will delete your account. Once you deactivate it, the company adds you to a list of accounts to be deleted . Your account remains there for 30 days before eventually being deleted.
iii. You can still “un-delete” your account if you wish! Even after you have deactivate your account, you will still be able to restore it back if the 30-day period hasn’t expired. This you will do by logging into your account again within the 30 days. After the expiry of the period, you will not be allowed to reactivate your account.
iv. Your username and email cannot be used (even if it’s truly yours) when the account is deactivated. If you skipped reading step #4, please re-read it again. The username and email of a deactivated account can only be used after the account is fully deleted by Twitter (after expiry of the 30-day duration).
v. Not all tweets will go away. After deactivating your account, most of your tweets will become unavailable. Then again, some of them that were either retweeted of favorite-selected by other people will remain available. After total deletion of your account, most of your popular tweets may still be located by search engines like Google or Bing.
CONCLUSION
Now you know how to deactivate your account on Twitter when you’ll need to do so. The instructions will work similar on computer and mobile. There can be a plethora of reasons why a person would want to close their social media profile. Regardless the reason the social websites don’t make it easy sometimes. They make you go through unneeded hoops to close your profile (especially if you are on Instagram). Hopefully this tutorial has aided in you achieving the purpose of removing your online profile quickly and efficiently.
